#TBT September is Hispanic Heritage Month. In Amer #TBT September is Hispanic Heritage Month. In America, soccer is still less popular than in other countries around the world. This was even more true in 1974. As Hispanic immigrants came into Belvidere, many found that their soccer options were limited, especially before High School. Hippolito Belman’s solution was creating the Belvidere Jr. “Latino” Soccer Team. The team was “Latino” because most of the team was originally Latino, but they didn’t actually have any barrier on who could join. They took part in the Rockford Metropolitan Soccer League and won the league their first year participating. That same year, they represented the Rockford League in an All Star game against a Chicago team and also won. The next year, the "Latinos" became back to back champions of the Rockford League. Their 1975 team can be seen here. Today, there are massive soccer programs for children, teens, and adults. We have certainly come a long way.

#TBT September is World Beach Month. Belvidere isn #TBT September is World Beach Month. Belvidere isn’t exactly known for beaches, but we do have a river. Many people along Lincoln Ave enjoy small, backyard beaches. Near the end of E Lincoln, at the bend of the Kishwaukee, was the site of a Park District beach known as Marshall Park. It was named after George Marshall, who donated the land to the park district.

Starting in 1921, Marshall Park was home to a bathhouse, picnic tables, fire pits, a concession stand, a diving float, water slides, and a band stand. Four tennis courts were also built across the street from the park.

Belvidere has been a major travel point for over one-hundred years now. Travelling swimmers were known to sometimes stop at the park to get their exercise in. The most famous was likely Johnny Weissmuller, a five-time gold medal winning Olympic swimmer and actor, who portrayed Tarzan.

During The Depression, the beach could not be sustained by The Park District. Donations from the public kept it alive for several years, but it officially closed in 1938. The property was returned to the Marshall family, and as the economy improved, The Park District focused on other parks for additions and improvements.
